Azerbaijani President: "Armenia intentionally Armenianizes all toponyms, trying to destroy Azerbaijan's footprint in the occupied territories"

"Azerbaijan's state independence is only 28 years old," the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, İlham Aliyev said at the XVIII Summit of heads of members states and governments of the Non-Aligned Movement which is held in Baku.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that a week ago - on October 18, Azerbaijan marked the restoration of its independence. The head of state then spoke about the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno Garabagh conflict: "Nagorno Garabagh and 7 surrounding regions - about 20% of the internationally recognized territories of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia. Armenia has pursued a policy of ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijanis, as a result of over 1 million Azerbaijani became refugees and IDPs. At that time, the population of Azerbaijan was 8 million, and our country was ranked first in the world in terms of per capita refugees and IDPs.Armenia committed Khojaly genocide against Azerbaijanis. As a result of the Khojaly genocide, 613 innocent people, including 106 women and 63 children, were brutally murdered because they were only Azerbaijani and more than a thousand were missing. Khojaly genocide is recognized by more than 10 countries in the world.

Mr President noted that the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council in 1993 required fully and unconditionally withdrawal of Armenian troops from the territory of Azerbaijan.“Unfortunately, these resolutions have not been implemented. Sometimes the Security Council resolutions are implemented within a few days, and sometimes they remain on paper for 26 years, as in the case of the conflict facing Azerbaijan. The policy of these double standards should be stopped”.

The Head of State brought into attention that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking Countries, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other influential organizations have adopted resolutions and decisions demanding the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. "Using the opportunity, I would like to express my gratitude to the Member States for their support for the resolution of the conflict within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions in the previously adopted Non-Aligned Movement documents."

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev noted that Armenall historical monuments, mosques and graves in occupied territories of Azerbaijan were destroyed by Armenia and museums and our material and spiritual wealth have been robbed: "Armenia intentionally Armenianizes all toponyms, trying to destroy Azerbaijan's footprint in the occupied territories. Armenia also pursues illegal settlement policies and illegal economic activities in the occupied territories, contrary to international humanitarian law. In April 2016, as a result of the military provocation by Armenia, 6 Azerbaijani civilians, including one child, were killed, 26 were injured and hundreds of houses were destroyed. Garabagh is the eternal land of Azerbaijan and the conflict should be resolved only within the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan."
