Baku – APA. A group of journalists permanently accredited in the Council of Europe, including a special correspondent of APA News Agency to Europe paid a visit to the Republic of Cyprus and held several meetings on the Greek side of the island.

The visit took place in the framework of the Cypriot Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

During a meeting with journalists, Ioannis Kasoulides, Foreign Minister of Cyprus, presented the priorities of the country’s six-month chairmanship of the CoE Committee of Ministers.

Referring to the “frozen conflicts” in the region, the minister stressed the need for all the inhabitants of Europe to use the legal mechanisms of the Council of Europe.

“As you know, the Council of Europe does not deal with the conflict resolution. As for the Council of Europe, the main purpose of the organization is to ensure all the inhabitants of Europe to use the legal instruments of the organization, in particular the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights,” added Kasoulides.

Asked by APA’s Europe correspondent about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territories, the minister said Cyprus will be neutral in its chairmanship of the CoE Committee of Ministers.

“Our main principle during chairmanship is to remain neutral. As far as I know, the OSCE Minsk Group is working to find a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. What’s important is that Armenia and Azerbaijan, for a peaceful solution to this problem, remain committed to their obligations to the Council of Europe. As the Council of Europe, we fully support the Minsk Group mediators’ efforts to restore negotiations. I think a meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian president by the summer would be a step forward to achieve a peaceful solution the conflict. The Council of Europe can make its own contribution by creating conditions for full confidence between the parties until the conflict is over. The Council of Europe is ready to help both countries about this problem,” the FM replied.
