Elman Nasirov: US takes double-standard approach to conflicts in post-Soviet area

Armenia is preparing to commit a new crime in the illegal regime it created by occupying Azerbaijani lands, MP Elman Nasirov, Director of the Institute of Political Studies of the Academy of Public Administration under the President, said in a statement to APA of the illegal referendum the Nagorno-Karabakh separatist regime planning to hold on February 20.

Nasirov said such a move is going to be another blow to the already stranded negotiations.

“This event will also take place in the same period as the Munich Security Conference. It’s clearly indicative of Armenia ignoring the norms of international law. Unfortunately, we’re not seeing the international community giving an adequate reaction to this provocation. What’s even more upsetting is that international organizations do react to analogous situations in other conflicts in the post-Soviet area, like those in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, lashing out at the holding of elections and referendums therein. The US is especially active in this regard. By the way, the US embassy in Georgia did react to the illegal South Ossetian regime’s decision to hold a referendum in April for renaming itself. But unfortunately, we don’t see the US speaking out against the initiative to hold an illegal referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh aimed at maintaining the status quo. This is a striking example of double standards. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also stated that if not for the arms and funds given by others as well as propaganda and lobbyist activities aided by foreign forces, minor Armenia would not have become so frantic. Therefore, it’s a moment of test for the international community, including the US and the OSCE Minsk Group,” he said.
