The Armenian state is only formally independent on the map, said Azerbaijan’s President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev.

The president made the remarks addressing the opening of a newly built military camp of the Defense Ministry in Pirekeshkul settlement of Absheron district on Jan. 23.

“Armenia is a dependent country that is unable to independently determine its own future,” President Aliyev noted.

“Armenia’s aggressive policy against Azerbaijan has led it to the current situation. Armenia’s only way out of this situation is the restoration of relations with its neighbors. To do this, Armenia must put an end to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories,” the president said.

With regard to the future status of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region occupied by Armenia, President Aliyev said. “The future status of Nagorno-Karabakh can only be determined within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.”

The head of state noted that the key factors for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are to ensure Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and put an end to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

“I reiterate that in order to achieve these goals, we have to be even stronger, and today we are creating a powerful Azerbaijani state, which is appreciated worldwide,” Ilham Aliyev said, adding. “We are building our own independent future. We regained our independence 25 years ago. I would like to note once again that we have achieved all this without any help.”
