Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloglu – APA. A panel session on “Defining the final legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity” was organized in Baku Nov. 8 within the framework of the international conference titled “Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: main obstacles and prospects of the settlement. View from Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

The panel was moderated by political analyst Rasim Aghayev.

Addressing the event, Vahan Martirosyan, head of the Armenian Intra-National Liberation Movement Organization, said that by holding this international conference Azerbaijan is making a step towards peace.

He noted that the persons, who impudently hold the power in Armenia, who have committed genocide in Khojaly, are now committing genocide against the people of Armenia.

“The Armenian Church does know that a sizeable Armenian minority lives in Azerbaijan. I’ve met some of them,” said Martirosyan.

He stressed that Armenian monuments are preserved in Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijani mosques and other monuments are demolished in Armenia.

“I’m convinced that events of this type will be lasting. Any conflict has victims. This process must be joined by civil society, journalists, and writers,” Martirosyan said, adding. “Armenians and Azerbaijanis make joint efforts in more than ten countries. We would like to believe that our peoples are going to see our efforts coming to fruition in the near future. You could hardly find a simple Armenian who is delighted with this 25-year-old conflict. There are only 500 to 600 Armenians who are interested to keep the conflict going. These are the ones who committed the genocide.”

Martirosyan noted that Sargsyan can’t recognize the puppet regime in Nagorno-Karabakh without the consent of his patrons.

“It’s impossible from the point of view of international law. Young soldiers from Armenia are serving in Nagorno-Karabakh. Almost all of Armenian casualties from the April fighting were sons from poor families in Armenia,” he said.

He added that the current regime in Armenia is trying to instill hatred against Turkey in the society. “But today, Turkey is providing food and clothing to Armenia. Armenia's economy is failing,” said Martirosyan.

In his speech, Rasim Aghayev said that Azerbaijan put forward an initiative to grant Nagorno-Karabakh the highest status of autonomy within its territorial integrity.

He recalled that Armenians lived in peace with Azerbaijanis in Nagorno-Karabakh during the Soviet period, and Azerbaijan now offers options for the peaceful coexistence of peoples.

Chairman of the Central Asian and Southern Caucasian Freedom of Expression Network (CASCFEN), Azer Hasrat stressed that ordinary Armenians are in favor of the compromise.

“Azerbaijanis have never esteemed ordinary Armenians as enemies. The population of Nagorno-Karabakh should not believe the rumors that they will be killed if Nagorno-Karabakh remains a part of Azerbaijan,” he added.

Chairman of “Prison Watch” Public Association Kamil Salimov said the Turkish hostility is meaningless.

“A large number of Armenians are living in Turkey. About 40,000 Armenians who are citizens of Armenia are working in Turkey,” he said.
