Google announced on Friday it has launched a paid-news platform in Australia in order to prove that the country’s law regarding enforced payments is needless. However, following Australian law, the launch of News Showcase will see it pay local media companies for their content, APA reports citing Teletrader.
In its statement, Google said it hopes to negotiate more agreements with other Australian publishers.
Under Canberra’s proposed legislation, all digital platforms are obliged to pay media companies for news content, while the US government suggested Australia should pursue a voluntary code instead. Google even threatened to make its search engine unavailable in the country.
