Over the past 30 years area of  spread of floodplains in Greater Caucasus increases by 15-20%

“On average 15-20% growth is observed in the area of floodplains in river basins located in south slain of Greater Caucasus in comparison to the information of 1961-1990 years,” it is reflected in the annual report for 2019 of the Institute of Geography of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, APA reports.

According to the report, it is more commonly observed in Shin, Kish, Demiraparan and Girdiman rivers. The main reasons for this are unsystematic grazing, deforestation, the construction of tourism and catering entities, road construction works.

It is reflected in the report that the total area of floodplains has constituted 1571 km2 (34%) for 1961–1990 years. Area of sources of floodplains is 2312,9 km2- 50.1% for 1990–2018 years. Over the past 30 years, the spread of floodplains has increased by 15-20% in Greater Caucasus.
