The outbreak of the coronavirus is out of control, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a press conference on September 16, APA reports.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis unlike any of the crises in our lives, and this year’s General Assembly will be unlike any other,” Guterres said.

He noted that soon humanity will overcome the milestone of 1 million lives lost due to coronavirus.

“Meanwhile, the outbreak is spiraling out of control. The virus is the number one threat to global security in the modern world, ”the Secretary General said.

The COVID-19 vaccine alone will not eliminate the crisis caused by the pandemic, added Antonio Guterres.

He noted that many are pinning their hopes on a vaccine, however, according to the Secretary General, there is no panacea for the pandemic.

“Vaccine alone cannot solve this crisis. Certainly not in the near future, ”Guterres said.

He called for a significant increase in the use of new and existing tools that can help with treatment, and provide life-saving treatment to combat the spread of infection, to save lives, especially over the next 12 months.

“But… the vaccine should be seen as a global public good because COVID-19 knows no boundaries. We need a vaccine that is affordable and accessible to everyone – a vaccine for people, ”the Secretary General said.

On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 a pandemic.
