UN allocates USD 1 mln to Azerbaijan for demining occupied territories

"More than 10 thousand people became victims of mines and unexploded ordnances in the world in 2020," said UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Charu Bist at the briefing held at ADA University regarding April 4 - International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, APA reports.

Charu Bist noted that one of each 4 victims is a child.

Adviser to the UNDP Resident Representative brought to attention that human lives are saved with this: “At the same time we should help to unexploded ordnance and mine victims.”

Charu Bist noted that this year April 4 - International Mine Awareness and Mine Action Day coincides with the period of coronavirus pandemic: “As a result of Azerbaijan’s demining with the support of the UN since the 1990s, a condition has been created for returning of more than 163 thousand IDPs. We signed a new contract two weeks ago. crisis Response Fund allocated assistance amounted to USD 1 mln. This will be directed to the expenditures of staff and assistance. This includes training for mine detection dogs.
