10,309 biological samples collected from family member of 3,315 missing persons, 1,024 biological samples profiled

"The main organization, which with State Commission cooperated during both the First and Second Karabakh War, have been the ICRC. One of main tasks in this field has been specification list of persons became missing in the First Karabakh War," said Ismayil Akhundov, Secretary of the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, head of the Working Group at a conference today on "Identification of missing persons - Humanitarian approach" dedicated to the August 30 - International Day of the Disappeared with an organization of the State Commission and International Committee of the Red Cross regarding prisoners of war, hostages and missing persons, APA reports.

Ismayil Akhundov has noted that in accordance with the framework agreement signed between ICRC Representation in Azerbaijan and State Commission “On collection and centralized management of ante mortem data about the missing persons” in April 2008, work of gathering biological examples (DNA) from missing persons’ families has been started from 2014: "Over the past period, 10,309 biological samples were taken from family members of 3,315 missing persons. Since November of 2021, work of DNA profiling has been started from gathered biological samples. DNA profiling has been conducted on each of 1,024 biological samples so far."
