"Restoration of about 40 karezes in Aghdam, Aghjabadi, Barda, Fuzuli, Ganja, Gazakh, Goranboy, and Goygol districts is considered," said Deputy Chairman of State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDPs Fuad Huseynov in an international conference on "Karez Systems Architectural Monument as Basis for Sustainable Water System and Public and Economic Development" dedicated to "Complex development of rural areas, settled by IDPs, through restoration of karez water systems in Azerbaijan" APA reports.
According to him, international organizations greatly supported refugees and internally-displaced persons in the first years of conflict: "In this direction, activities of the UN institutions, as well as International Organization for Migration are also remarkable and their activities regarding IDPs are highly appreciated. A project has been implementing since 1999 regarding restoration of karezes in Azerbaijan with different donor organizations of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). In total, 10 projects have been implemented so far regarding restoration of karezes. "Complex development of rural areas, settled by IDPs, through restoration of karez water systems in Azerbaijan" project, implemented by IOM Representation in Azerbaijan with the financial support of Korean International Cooperation Agency is also included in these projects. Restoration of about 40 karezes is considered within the framework of the project in Aghdam, Aghjabadi, Barda, Fuzuli, Ganja, Gazakh, Goranboy, and Goygol districts, densely-populated by IDPs."
