Turkish footballer Ahmet Calik died in a road accident on Tuesday, his club Ittifak Holding Konyaspor confirmed on Tuesday, APA reports citing Anadolu Agency.

He was 27.

In a Twitter post, Konyaspor expressed "deep sadness" over their player's death and offered condolences to Calik's family and the Turkish football community.

Meanwhile, a police source told Anadolu Agency that Calik had a traffic accident on a highway near the capital Ankara on early Tuesday.

Calik was alone in the car, the source said, adding an investigation into the accident has been launched.

Many Turkish Super Lig clubs, including Genclerbirligi, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor, and Turkish Football Federation, extended their condolences over the death of Calik on social media.

The defender had played for Genclerbirligi and Galatasaray before he moved to Konyaspor in 2020.

He was a two-time Turkish champion with Galatasaray in 2018 and 2019.
