Baku - APA. Tehran doesn’t recognize the “parliamentary elections” recently held in Nagorno-Karabakh, Ambassador of Iran to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeen said in an interview to APA.

“There is no country called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and the Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognize such “a country”. Of course, we don’t recognize the “elections held there”, said the diplomat.

The ambassador noted that Iran supports a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

“One of our dreams is to achieve the four resolutions of the United Nations to be implemented. This conflict should be resolved peacefully within the framework of international law,” he added.

Asked if the OSCE Minsk Group’s activity can be considered satisfactory, the ambassador said: “The OSCE MG must take more decisive steps for the settlement of the conflict. The developments in the region, especially the Ukrainian crisis, suggest that the countries that are supposed to work on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict have actually evaded from the topic. Iran is concerned over the instability dominating at its borders. The settlement of this conflict would accelerate the development of not only Azerbaijan but Iran. Iran is not satisfied with the OSCE Minsk Group’s activity at all. We are not optimistic about this matter. Especially double standard approaches from countries outside the region are unacceptable. All the three co-chair countries are members of the UN Security Council. But why do they find it so hard to fulfill the resolutions which they have adopted themselves? It does not necessarily matter which countries the co-chairs represent. What matters is that the co-chair countries should fulfill their duties with responsibility. The problem is that those countries are reluctant to do what they have to”.

To the question why the West does not seem willing to give the same reaction to the two-decade old Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as it gave to the Ukrainian conflict, the ambassador replied, “Ukraine is the energy route for Europe”.

“This is why the Ukrainian conflict was met with such a reaction. It appears to me that the involved countries paid much more attention to the Ukrainian events,” he stressed.
