24 years passed since the accident, occurred in Baku Metro, APA reports.

289 people (126 women, 28 children and 3 rescuers) died and 270 people got injured as a result of fire, broke out in metro carriage between “Ulduz” and “Narimanov” stations on October 28, 1995.

Scope of the tragedy was large as the fire broke out in the tunnel and rescuing operations are not at satisfying level. Main reason of the accident was disorder of the train, provided with old equipment and train driver’s wrong decision.

The accident was not considered a terror attack, but evaluated as a technical accident. Investigation group, conducting long-lasting researches excluded the accident’s being a terror act. It was announced that the accident occurred due to carelessness. The train driver stopped it in the tunnel and passengers started to run away from carriages in a hurry.

As a result of conducted research, driver’s stopping train in the tunnel was considered a wrong decision. Train driver and controller were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment due to disobedience to security regulations.

3 days of mourning was declared in the country in accordance with order of President Heydar Aliyev, people, died in the accident were buried at the expense of state and their families were provided with AZN 1 million. The accident was included in the Guinness record Book as the most terrible metro accident in the history.
