In 2017 some of Azerbaijani citizens convicted abroad asked Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsperson) to provide assistance in their repatriation, reads an annual report by the Ombudsperson, APA reports.
On the basis of these appeals, inquiries were sent to the relevant structures, and investigations were carried out, according to the report.
“In 2017, 53 Azerbaijani citizens convicted abroad were repatriated, while 81 foreigners imprisoned in Azerbaijan were handed over to their countries,” says the report.
