Azerbaijan detains eight on suspicion of fighting abroad

In 2016, Azerbaijan’s border guards detained eight people on suspicion of involvement in illegal military operations abroad, the State Border Service said in a statement on the outcomes of its activity in 2016.

During the reporting period, Azerbaijan’s border guards have prevented the smuggling of 7.2 times more drugs compared to 2015, reads the statement.

In 2016, the State Border Service identified seven Azerbaijani and one foreign citizen suspected of espionage against the country and another four Azerbaijani citizens involved in secret collaboration.

Six criminal groups involved in illegal migration and five organized gangs involved in smuggling and drug trafficking were detained in 2016.

Moreover, Azerbaijan’s border guards detained 13,248 people over violating the country’s state border, as well as 4,590 wanted people.

The smuggling of goods worth over 49 million manats was prevented in 2016, 8.3 times up compared to 2015.

The smuggling of over 1 ton of drugs was prevented in 2016, 7.2 times higher compared to 2015.
