Penitentiary Service refutes reports of unrest in Baku detention facility

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. The Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan’s Justice Ministry has denied reports recently disseminated by some media outlets regarding unlawful actions committed against inmates, mass unrest among prisoners, deployment of special forces on jails, demand of money from inmates and their relatives in some prisons, including jails #13 and 6, and the Baku detention facility.

The Penitentiary Service told APA that such slanderous and biased reports are aimed at overshadowing positive works being carried out in the service, causing confusion among the people and concern of inmates and their close relatives.

Penitentiary Service reiterated that reports titled “Riot in Baku detention facility: forces were deployed” are groundless, operating condition is stable and under control in prisons and detention facilities, prison rules and regulation are fully observed.

Some media outlets reported about the riot in Baku detention facility today. According to the reports, inmates attacked staff of the facility, leaving the chief and deputy chief of the prison injured.
