Six farmers have been beheaded by Boko Haram militants at a plantation in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state, according to the country's News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), quoting local sources, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.
The killing occurred on Sunday in the village of Dimge where the farmers were abducted, shot dead, and later beheaded, NAN quoted Jiddah Ahmad, a local whose brother was among the victims, as saying on Monday.
Ahmad said two of the victims were from the village of Lawanti Gongulon in Jere while the remaining four were from Masu in the state’s Mafa local government area.
NAN quoted Usman Mohamed, a member of a government-backed local vigilante formation, as saying the militants had earlier slaughtered four other farmers at the same plantation.
Mohamed said the insurgents forced an aged farmer among the abductees to witness the brutal murder of other farmers, telling him to convey the message to the families of the victims, said the news agency, not telling when this incident took place.
“We are currently seeking clearance from the military authorities to enable us to evacuate the corpses for proper burial,” Mohamed was quoted as saying.
Nigeria says it has decimated the militants, although pockets of violence continue unabated along with deadly suicide bombings often staged in Maiduguri, Borno’s capital city.
Nigeria has seen deadly violence by Boko Haram militants since it announced armed struggle against the Nigerian government in 2009.
