Nine people aged 19-25, including one woman, were injured on Thursday evening when an unidentified number of suspects opened fire in a drive-by shooting in Providence, the capital city of the eastern U.S. state Rhode Island, APA reports citing Xinhua.
The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. eastern time (2300 GMT), said the police, noting at least three of the victims are in serious, possibly critical, condition.
However, the police said that the shooting was not random and stemmed from a feud between two groups.
"We have a good handle on everyone that is involved in this incident," the police said, "the assailant group pulled up in a car, and the other group was at a home... They're well known to Providence Police."
An estimated several dozen shots were fired. Police sealed off the area following the shooting, the police added.
No arrests have been made, according to the police. An investigation is underway.
