The United States Food and Drugs Administration warned on Friday against the usage of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to the risk of heart rhythm problems, APA reports citing Breaking The News.

"Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19," the FDA stated, adding these drugs "can cause abnormal heart rhythms such as QT interval prolongation and a dangerously rapid heart rate called ventricular tachycardia."

The FDA has issued the warning after finding out the usage of these drugs could be connected to concerning heart-related adverse events and deaths of patients infected with the coronavirus.
