Hudayat Orujov: No need to amend the law on freedom of religion or conscience

“There is no need to amend the law on freedom of religion or conscience. Such a law has not been adopted in many countries,” chief of State Committee for Religious Affairs Hidayat Orujov told a press conference, APA reports.
Noting that the law on freedom of religion or conscience was adopted in Azerbaijan in 1992 he said that there is no need to adopt it again.
Orujov noted the possibility of making some amendments to the law.
Commenting on teaching religion in secondary schools the committee chief said there is no need for it.
The committee chief added that there is information about religion in the textbook. A new subject to be taught at the secondary schools as from the next year. Hidayat Orujov said corresponding measures are taken against non-traditional religious organizations in Azerbaijan. The committee chief said that such organizations violate human rights and interfere in free religious choice.
“Azerbaijani people condemn these tendencies. Activities are being carried out to ensure freedom of religion in the country. Azerbaijan is the leader for religious stability in the region,” he said. /APA/
