Baku Conference on gender equality in Islam held in

Chairman of the State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s issues Hijran Huseynova said that the main aim of the campaign is to prevent gender-based violence and early marriages, informing women about international documents on human rights and national legislation and achieve women’s equal participation in social and political life of the country.
Ms.Huseynova particularly underlined that men and women have equal rights in Islam.
“The state concerning divorce in Azerbaijan is satisfactory. 71,643 married in 2005 and 8,895 divorced. 79,443 married and 7,817 divorces in 2006,” she said.
Chief of State Committee for Religious Affairs Hidayat Orujov noted that men and women were not equal before Islam.
“It is Islam that brought equality to these relations,” he said.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, deputies of Education, Youth and Sport Ministers expressed their positions on the issue. /APA/
