Baku. Malahat Najafova – APA. As part of his official visit to Azerbaijan, Pope Francis has visited the Alley of Martyrs to commemorate Azerbaijani heroes who gave their lives for the country’s independence and territorial integrity.
Pope Francis laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame monument.
The anthems of the Holy See and Azerbaijan were played.
The Pope is also expected to have a meeting with Azerbaijani authorities, representatives of the public and diplomatic corps at the Heydar Aliyev Center.
Pope Francis arrived in Azerbaijan for a one-day visit on Oct. 2.
The papal plane landed in Baku’s Heydar Aliyev international airport, where the Pontiff was greeted by the first deputy prime minister of Azerbaijan Yaqub Eyyubov as well as other officials.
