Azerbaijani Appeal Court’s judge confirms corruption in judiciary

Chairman of Court Board of Appeals Court on Crimes and Administrative Reprimands and future judge of Sumgait Appeals Court Ilham Hasanov told the meeting of parliament standing committee on legal policy and state building. Touching upon the illegitimacies in judiciary systems Judge said there are fair and unfair articles on this issue in the press. Ilham Hasanov confessed bribe-taking cases in courts but stressed it belongs to other fields too.
“Bribe-taking cases exist at all levels. There are bribery cases even in the states like US. But it must have limits. It is not right to connect bribing only with judges”. Ilham Hasanov Appeal Court has 35 judges and they work very hardly.
“ Only in 2006 we considered 12 thousand applications. Judges work very hardly. It is physically impossible to do judges’ works sometimes. Judges differ from each other”.
Ilham Hasanov said judges were not punished for their false verdict until today. “Law punishes for biased verdict of judges. We could not find any judge punished for false verdict”. Ilham Hasanov emphasized the low level of young lawyers recruited by courts.” Education also suffers from problems. The education level of young lawyers is too bad”.
Safa Mirzayev seriously reacted to Ilham Hasanov’s statement. Head of parliament Administration protested to the judge’s remarks.
