Russia's Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities and China's National Space Administration issued a joint statement on Friday saying that they are cooperating on the creation of the International Scientific Lunar Station (ISLS), APA reports citing Teletrader.

According to the press release, the ISLS is a "complex of experimental research facilities created on the surface and/or in Moon orbit," with its primary purpose being research activities on the potential uses for the Moon, future explorations, and lunar observations. The two countries are partnering due to "recognizing the mutual interest" of the project, but have stated they are open to possible material or non-material involvement of other countries, as well as international organizations.

Russia has already announced this week plans to launch the first module of its new space station in 2025.
