Azerbaijan has revealed rules for compulsory medical treatment of prisoners who will be released due to drug addiction.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the parliamentary committee on legal policy and state building discussed including a new chapter in the Code of Criminal Procedure on rules for compulsory medical treatment of prisoners who will be released due to drug addiction, APA reported.

The proceedings on application of compulsory medical measures concerning the person who committed the crime specified in the Article 234.1 (illegal purchase or storage without a purpose of selling of narcotics or psychotropic substances in a quantity (amount) exceeding necessary for personal consumption) of the Criminal Code, has no other criminal offence in his or her act, suffers from drug addiction and is intended to be released from criminal liability because of this disease is conducted taking into account the features defined in the new chapter annexed to this Code.

The pre-trial proceedings on application of compulsory medical measures concerning the person and is intended to be released from criminal liability because of drug addiction is conducted in the form of preliminary investigation. The person conducting the proceedings, lawyer and the legal representative shall participate in the proceedings. Relevant provisions in this regard are specified in the Chapter.

The draft law was recommended for consideration at a parliamentary plenary session.
