Azerbaijan may apply new rules for the conditional release of inmates serving life sentences.

A new item (4-1) has been proposed by the Azerbaijani president to be added to Article 76 (conditional early release from serving a sentence) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, APA reported.

Under the new item, when the person serving a life sentence is released from imprisonment as prescribed in Article 57.3, his/her compliance with the rules of serving the sentence for the last five years shall be taken into consideration, APA reported.

Currently, only Article 57.3 (The court, taking into account the valid served period by condemned which is not less than twenty five years' of punishment period in life imprisonment, as well as not committing by condemned a deliberate crime serving punishment and coming to a conclusion about loss of necessity of the further serving of punishment, can replace life imprisonment by imprisonment with the certain term or conditionally - prescheduled to release him from this punishment) is taken into consideration.

The draft amendments will be tabled in parliament after public hearings in the coming days.
