The Austrian government said the country will enter a nationwide lockdown from next Monday, with general mandatory vaccinations against COVID-19 coming from February next year, APA reports citing Teletrader.
If it proceeds with the decision, Austria would become one of the first countries in the world to widen vaccine mandate to populations other than people at high risk of contracting the disease.
Local authorities agreed with the federal government to impose this set of measures, including switching schools to mostly online work. The lockdown is expected to last for 10 days, with the government hinting at a possible increase to three weeks if the health situation doesn't improve. However, unvaccinated citizens would remain barred from public spaces even after the lockdown ends. For the duration of lockdown, non-essential stores and other venues will stay closed.
