Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez said on Tuesday his city is ready to take over from Istanbul as the host of this year's UEFA Champions League final if necessary due to the coronavirus pandemic, APA reports citing Teletrader.
"I know arrangements are being made, and I want to declare the city hall's absolute support for this Champions League final being held in Madrid," Martinez said as cited by Marca. Madrid already hosted last year's final in which Liverpool beat Tottenham.
The Champions League final was originally scheduled for May 30 in Istanbul but was postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis. UEFA now intends to stage the final in August but could move it from Turkey depending on the situation in the country.
