Public Health England (PHE) stated on Friday that the number of coronavirus cases attributable to the Delta variant increased by 32% or 54,268 since last week out of a total of 216,249. The Delta variant "currently accounts for approximately 99% of cases that are sequenced across the UK," PHE said, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"The data continues to show that the sharp increase in cases that we are seeing is not being followed by a similar increase in hospitalization and death. This is because two doses of the available vaccines offer a high level of protection against the Delta variant," explained Chief Executive of the UK Health Security Agency Dr. Jenny Harries. According to PHE data up to June 25, around 30,300 deaths and 8,151,000 infections have been prevented as a result of the COVID-19 vaccination program.
