The European karate championship of license character scheduled for 2021 may be held in Baku, Yashar Bashirov, president of the Azerbaijan Karate Federation told apasport.az.

He said although the continental championship has been planned to be held the next year in Sweden’s Gothenburg City, the World Karate Federation (WKF) may change the venue. And this will depend on economic situation in Sweden after the period of coronavirus pandemic: “If Sweden refuses to host this tournament, the implementation of the European championship scheduled for the next year will be assigned to us. Even if they don’t refuse hosting the championship, the hosting of the competition may be assigned to us due to situation in that country”.

Bashirov added that even if the European championship is held in Sweden the next year, the implementation of the championship in 2022 will most likely be assigned to Azerbaijan: “The president of the European and the World Karate Federations Antonio Espinoza has already proposed us to hold the European championship in 2022. If the next year’s competition takes place in Sweden, then the implementation of the continental championship in 2022 will be assigned to Azerbaijan”.

Note that the European championship among adults planned to be held in Baku in March of this year was terminated due to coronavirus pandemic.
