Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation has been named “The Best Member National Association of the Year”, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) announced on Monday.
WTF held an event in Baku Dec. 12 to wrap up the year 2016, APAsport reported.
The event was attended by WTF President Chungwon Chu, presidents of the continental confederations, Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov, President of Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation Kemaleddin Heydarov and other guests
Addressing the event, WTF President Chungwon Chu called the world taekwondo a single family.
Chu congratulated Azerbaijan’s Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov on taekwando fighter Radik Isayev’s victory at RIO 2016.
He announced that Djibouti became the WTF 207th member.
Following his speech, Chungwon Chu presented a special award to President of the Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation Kemaleddin Heydarov, who is also the WTF Vice-President.
Kemaleddin Heydarov, in turn, expressed gratitude to Chungwon Chu for giving the right to Baku to host the Grand Prix final, the Annual Gala Awards and the World Cup of women's and men's teams.
Later on, the winners were announced.
The Best Member National Association of the Year award was won by Azerbaijan.
The Coach of the Year award was won by Azerbaijan’s Reza Mehmandoust.

Male Athlete of the Year award - Ahmad Abughaush (Jordan)
Female Athlete of the Year award - Jade Jones (Great Britain)
Referee of the Year award, Women - Maria Merkouri (Georgia)
Referee of the Year award, Men - Song-chul Kim (Canada)
Best Member National Association of the Year - Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation
Best Kick of the Year award - Cheick Salleh Junior Cisse (Cote d’Ivoire’s)
Coach of the Year award - Reza Mehmandoust (Azerbaijan)
