Diego Forlán officially put an end to his career on Wednesday, APA reports citing Tellerreport.

The Uruguayan striker has been without a club since the summer of 2018.

"After 21 years I have decided to quit as a professional football player," Forlán writes on Twitter. "A wonderful period with great memories and emotions is coming to an end, but a new era is starting. I want to thank everyone who has crossed my path in football in the past period."

Forlán, now forty years old, started his career in 1998 with Independiente in Argentina and was brought to Europe by Manchester United four years later. After a not too successful period with 'The Red Devils', Forlán made his breakthrough in 2004 in Spain.

After three strong years at Villarreal, he moved to Atlético Madrid in 2007, where he knew the best period of his career. He played 198 times for the Madrilenians between 2007 and 2011. He scored 96 goals and delivered 32 assists.
