Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has issued a statement on the situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, APA reports.
In a statement, Mr. Borell said that the EU is closely monitoring the latest situation on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.
"On my behalf, Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Stefano Sannino contacted Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan on May 13 and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on May 14. He called on both sides to exercise extreme restraint and not escalate the situation. "The Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar has contacted the OSCE Chairmanship.
The EU High Representative said that the delimitation and demarcation of the border should be resolved through negotiations for the security of the local population. "We welcome the ongoing technical contacts between the two sides. The EU supports a comprehensive settlement of the conflict and encourages both countries to find a peaceful solution while maintaining stability in the region," the statement said.
