"Azerbaijan pursues an independent foreign policy, this policy based on national interests and justice and has earned us many friends," the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev said at the XVIII Summit of heads of members states and governments of the Non-Aligned Movement which is held in Baku.
The President said that the election of Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council with the support of 155 countries in 2011 is a clear example of this: “During its membership in the Security Council, Azerbaijan has made significant contributions to the promotion of international peace and security and justice and has become an active participant in international political processes. Azerbaijan also contributes to international peacekeeping operations established under the mandate of the UN Security Council. Our country hosts regular meetings Russia-NATO, Russia-USA top military leaders. There are about 200 countries in the world. The selection of Azerbaijan for the meetings I mentioned between these countries is an indication of respect for the independent foreign policy that we pursue.”
