Armenia and Azerbaijan can resolve the border issue on the basis of maps from the Soviet period, but this process requires mutual compromises, Russian President Vladimir Putin said while speaking at the session of the Valdai Club, on October 21, APA reports.
Russian President emphasized that the main goal is to create a safe coexistence of the two states and create conditions for economic development: "The most important thing now is to finally settle the situation on the border."

Here, even we, perhaps, do not need anyone else, except for the two sides and Russia. Why? There are very simple, pragmatic things here: yes, because there are maps in the General Staff of the Russian army, which show how the border between the Union republics passed during the Soviet period. "
“First, I must pay tribute to the political wisdom of both the President of Azerbaijan [Ilham Aliyev] and the Prime Minister of Armenia [Nikol Pashinyan]. Still, despite all the tragedy of the current events, they managed to rise above the current political situation and make a very responsible decision. <...> Still, President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan managed to stop the bloodshed. But even this is not the only point, although there can be nothing more important than saving human lives. Nevertheless, there are still important aspects, namely, it is necessary to create conditions for a long-term settlement in the region as a whole. These conditions can be created only if both sides accept the agreements reached as long-term and both sides appreciate the advantages, I want to emphasize this, of peaceful coexistence.
