"Today is an important day for both Azerbaijan, the UN, and the international community. Because we start a new initiative today. Certainly, new initiatives are always significant. Azerbaijani government took responsibility in the period of difficulties caused by pandemics and agreed for cooperation with us," High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Angel Moratinos, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, told journalists, APA reports.

He noted that usually, political, economic, financial initiatives are put forward: “However, currently, culture plays a main role, especially in the period after COVID-19. Pandemic has created a crisis for both health and economy. First of all, COVID-19 has already become a human crisis. We should express gratitude to the minister of culture Anar Karimov for this initiative. Now we aspire to peace for culture. It is not only for Azerbaijan, reconciliation, peace in the region, but also it is important for Africa, Latin America, and Asia.”

UN official noted that he experienced mixed feelings during his visit to the region: “I was shocked, experienced stress due to the scenes I saw in liberated territories, it is unacceptable. Nothing has been left, life has not been left in these territories after 30 years. I was very saddened by what I saw. In Aghdam, I also saw the future, the new plan of the city, how the Azerbaijani government rebuild the territory. These made me hopeful and I will try to keep the hope, the bright future on my mind. I will provide all the support I can to support this process.”
