It was known that what threats Azerbaijan was facing when the "Contract of the Century" was being signed, and national leader Heydar Aliyev also mentioned it, said First Vice Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ziyafat Asgarov.
He made the remarks speaking about the negotiations on settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during the 15th meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in Baku on Tuesday, APA reports.
"We know the region in which Azerbaijan is situated. We also knew what threats Azerbaijan was facing when the "Contract of the Century" was being signed. Heydar Aliyev also mentioned it. Nevertheless, Azerbaijan signed this agreement at that time,” the vice speaker said.
Asgarov accused Armenia of pursuing a policy of terror.
“Serzh Sargsyan, author of this policy, has been removed from power. Let's see if someone with a healthy mindset will replace him in Armenia. There will be no prosperity in Armenia unless the Azerbaijani lands are under occupation. Armenia should abandon this occupation policy. Only then can stability prevail in the region. However, Armenia turns a blind eye to international law. Why is the European Union following a double standard policy towards Azerbaijan? And why are no sanctions imposed on Armenia? A different attitude is being displayed to Russia regarding Ukraine. Twenty percent of our lands are occupied and you are defending criminals over there. Drugs are being cultivated in the occupied districts of Azerbaijan. Currently, most of the drugs being sold in Europe have been cultivated in our occupied territories,” the vice-speaker added.
