Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said he is saddened that Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was partially destroyed in a fire on Monday, ONA reports.
“Saddened that Notre Dame – that iconic monument dedicated to the worship of our one God and that brought all of us closer through Hugo’s literary masterpiece – is partially destroyed after standing through wars and revolution for 800 years,” Zarif tweeted.
“Our thoughts are with the French and all Catholics,” he added.
A major fire engulfed the medieval Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, one of France's most famous landmarks, on Monday. The fire ripped through the structure and caused the roof and main spire to collapse.
The blaze burned for eight hours, but has now been largely extinguished, according to firefighters. One official was quoted as saying the two iconic rectangular towers have been saved. Earlier, a French Interior Ministry official had said that firefighters might not be able to save the cathedral.
