New spelling dictionary of the Azerbaijani language will be sent for printing the next week, director of Linguistics Institute named after Nasimi of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Mohsun Nagisoylu told APA.
He said 18 thousand words were removed from dictionary, 6 thousand new words were added: “There are about 90 thousand words in the dictionary. The dictionary will be printed in an edition of 1000 copies. New words related to military sphere were added to the dictionary. For instance, mountain rifle, quadcopter, diversion-reconnaissance are the newest words”.
The director also talked about words removed from the dictionary: “The words removed from the dictionary are mostly the words of Arabic and Persian origin i.e. the words that are not used in literary language, the double-version words. For instance, tələm-tələsik and təlmə-tələsik (hastily, hurriedly), altın and altun (gold), yorğun and yornuq (tired). In other words, there were two versions of the same word in the dictionary. We kept one version of it. Those that are not used in the literary language were removed”.
