Azerbaijan’s Health minister: "Currently, the coronavirus epidemic in the country is completely controlled"

The 73rd meeting of the World Health Assembly was continued in videoconference format. The World Health Assembly is a governing body of the WHO that solves the health issues included in agenda by the Executive Committee. The delegations of all member states of WHO usually participate in its activity. The session that continued its work again is dedicated to strengthening of measures of fight against COVID-19 pandemic, epidemiological control, implementation of quarantine rules, use of the gained positive experience and activities to be carried out against coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Health told APA.

The WHO General Director Tedros Ghebreyesus opened the online session, called for ensuring continuous financing of WHO and investigation of scope of the world health services, making a step into “new cooperation era” based on the lessons given by COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Minister Ogtay Shiraliyev also made a speech at the session. The Health minister greeting Assembly’s General Secretary, President and ministers and head of delegations participating in the online event noted that today, the priority of health workers is coordination of measures of fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Then Ogtay Shiraliyev provided information about quite great volume of works completed during the period past after commencement of fight against pandemic in Azerbaijan. According to him, as a result of the taken measures, currently, the coronavirus epidemic in the country is completely controlled: "To the present day, approximately 60,000 people got sick in the country with population of 10 million people, over 1,3 million tests were performed, the death cases arising from this disease made up 1,3%”.

The health minister stressed that during the past period, a number of countries have gained certain experience in the area of fight against coronavirus and the exchange of those experiences should turn into one of the most important areas of cooperation today. Ogtay Shiraliyev saying growth of number of cases of infection with this disease in a number of countries will undoubtedly result in even greater social and economic fallouts informed that special meeting of the UN General Assembly dedicated to fight against COVID-19 will be held on December 3 and 4 of the current year by initiative of the President of Azerbaijan.

An important part of speech of the head of Health Ministry was dedicated to the agreement signed by the heads of state of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia regarding full ceasefire and halting of all military operations in the Nagorno Garabagh conflict zone. The minister noted that during the 30-years occupation, thousands of people including children, elderly people and women were killed and wounded, all cities and settlements were destructed. Over one million people who lost their homes became internally displaced people and refugees: "At last, everything has finalized! Together with specialists of various spheres, the health workers should also do their best in order to restore the medical infrastructure destructed and brought to disrepair by the Armenian occupants. Such goals as construction of new clinics and up-to-date medical centers with advanced equipment, organization of health protection of population are ahead of us. Despite of great volume of work, all these are creative duties and we will be very happy about its implementation!".
