A single dose of the coronavirus vaccine offers as much protection against severe Covid-19 to people who were shielding during the pandemic as it does for the rest of the population, a study has found, APA reports citing BBC.

Scottish researchers said there had previously been concerns that a weakened immune system may reduce vaccine effectiveness.

Data was compiled from more than 100,000 people to determine impact on reducing severe forms of the virus on the clinically extremely vulnerable.

The results show just as good efficacy for a single vaccine dose in protecting against severe Covid in those eligible for shielding.

However, there isn't enough data to show if this is the case for solid organ transplant recipients.

Clinically extremely vulnerable people are six times more likely to have a severe form of Covid-19, which could lead to hospitalisation or death.

However, researchers said "caution is still needed" by those who are vulnerable and shielding.
