European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is a candidate to replace NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, APA reports citing the Sun.
Von der Leyen is reportedly supported by several military alliance member states to take over NATO leadership when Stoltenberg leaves in October 2023. However, her term as European Commission president is due to expire in 2024 and the United Kingdom will likely veto von der Leyen's potential appointment, according to the report. Other candidates supposedly include UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, and Canada's Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Ukrainian media in February that he plans to join the leadership race.
