Finland is awaiting the European Union's (EU's) position on the fate of those who have fled conscription in Russia, APA's Moscow correspondent reports citing Yle.

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) says 1,109 Russian citizens so far have sought asylum in Finland to avoid military conscription in Russia.

"We haven't been able to issue decisions regarding asylum," Sanna Sutter, the Interior Ministry's immigration director, told the Finnish news agency (STT).

After discussing the matter of asylum applications submitted by draft-age men fleeing Russia, the Nordic countries have decided to wait for EU guidance before making any decisions.

It is, however, still uncertain when the EU will finalise its guidance on the issue.
