High energy prices, high inflation, and the Ukraine war – in view of these burdens, Foreign Minister Baerbock has promised Moldova further financial aid. A donor conference for the country is taking place in Bucharest today, APA reports citing Globe Echo.

Germany intends to continue providing financial support to the Republic of Moldova, which was recently recognized as a candidate for EU membership. This was announced by Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock before the start of a donor conference for Ukraine’s neighboring country. Representatives from a total of 24 countries are to take part in the meeting.

As the news agencies DPA and AFP unanimously reported, the federal government wants to raise 40 million euros to provide Moldova with economic support in view of the high inflation rate and the additional burden of high energy prices. The inflation rate in the country of around 2.6 million people is currently 29 percent. The funds from Germany are primarily intended to relieve private households in Moldova.

In addition to financial aid for the economic sector, Germany also wants to promote the expansion of renewable energies in Moldova and programs to use energy more efficiently, as reported by the DPA news agency, citing Baerbock’s delegation, which is accompanying them to Romania. For this purpose, another 20 million euros should flow into the former Soviet republic.

Moldova should also receive support from Germany when it comes to border protection – in the form of equipment such as video drones, night vision devices, SUVs, or devices for checking ID documents. The federal government plans to spend 17 million euros on this equipment and on financial support for the care of refugees from Ukraine in Moldova.
