27-year-old Farid Safarli, an Azerbaijani student of Jena University in Germany, who was reported missing in Iran, has been charged with espionage, his mother Dilara Asgarova told APA.

She said that Farid Safarli has been arrested in Iran: "Today I was informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan that the Iranian side has given them an official response. The answer stated that Farid Safarli was arrested in Iran on charges of espionage. Even our consulate had several phone conversations with Farid. We are currently requesting a meeting with Farid. Our consulate has appealed to the Iranian authorities about this."

Dilara Asgarova noted that the accusation against her son is unfounded: "The accusation is false, my son did not spy. We do not accept the accusations."

Notably, on February 20, Farid Safarli traveled to Tehran to see his girlfriend, a doctor with whom he had a practice at the same university. Although F. Safarli was supposed to return to Germany on March 5, he did not return. Since March 4, Farid's phone has been turned off, and contact with him has been completely lost.
