Hundreds of Afghans picked their way on Friday through the carnage left behind by the previous day’s deadly suicide bombing outside Kabul airport in a last-ditch effort to flee the country, as the U.S. and its allies rushed to complete their final evacuation flights, APA reports quoting the WSJ.

The death toll among Afghans rose to nearly 200, according to a senior health official. One hospital, the Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital in central Kabul, said it had received the bodies of 145 people killed. It was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks of the 20-year war in Afghanistan.

The U.S., which lost 13 members of its armed services, vowed to retaliate against Islamic State’s local offshoot, known as ISIS-K, which claimed responsibility for the attack.

One suicide bomber was involved, the Pentagon said Friday. There was also gunfire, defense officials said. On Thursday, U.S. officials had said there were two suicide bombers.
