United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell issued a joint statement on Saturday, expressing their support for North Macedonia and Albania to open EU accession negotiations, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"At this critical moment in European history, marked by the unjustifiable aggression carried out by Russia against Ukraine, advancing Albania and North Macedonia's EU path is key to strengthening the cohesion and resilience of the entire European continent," the statement noted. "Guided by common values and EU standards and benchmarks, both countries are ready to take the next step toward EU membership."

The two officials reiterated that the bloc and Washington have agreed to closer cooperate in the Western Balkans to ensure "stability and prosperity" and make the region's "European and Euro-Atlantic future a reality."
