Azerbaijani official: Impossible to defeat national will

It is impossible to defeat the national will, said Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijani President’s Assistant for Public and Political Affairs.

Hasanov made the remarks on Monday at an event commemorating the second anniversary of the coup attempt in Turkey, APA reports.

The event was held at the Turkish Embassy in Baku.

“We watched the events of July 15 in Turkey with great excitement. Azerbaijan didn’t sleep that night. Following those events, at the same time, we expressed out support to the Turkish government. The phrase “One nation, two states,” fully proved itself in those days. We demonstrated the unshakeable friendship of Turkey-Azerbaijan,” Hasanov said.

The top official also touched upon the events that took place in Azerbaijan’s Ganja city a few days ago.

The events in Ganja were committed by traitors aiming to harm the statehood, Hasanov stressed.

“Two police officers who were among peaceful people were killed. The names of these police officers are written in gold letters in the history of our country. One can see a parallel between the events in Turkey and Ganja,” he added.

Hasanov pointed out that the events of July 15 in Turkey are similar to the events of 20 January 1990 in Azerbaijan.

“Those responsible for the events of July 15 in Turkey were connected with Turkey. However, those who brutally killed civilians in Baku were pro-Armenian people. In both cases, there was an attempt to break the national will. It is possible to attack people using tanks and military aircraft, but it is impossible to defeat the national will. Nobody in history has succeeded in this, especially, it is impossible to defeat the national will when there is a unity between national leader and national government,” the top official said.

Hasanov noted that the events of October 1994 and March 1995, when an attempt was made to overthrow President Heydar Aliyev who reflected the people’s will, roughly resemble what took place in Turkey on July 15.

“At that time, Azerbaijani citizens, who strayed from their true path and who infiltrated into the army, internal troops and the police, targeted the state and statehood. Why did they fail to success? Because Heydar Aliyev opposed these forces, relying on the people’s will. Heydar Aliyev called on citizens who support the Azerbaijani state take to streets. Hundreds of thousands of citizens stood up against these armed criminal groups and disarmed them. In a word, there are no forces in history capable of defeating the national will, and, probably, there will be so such forces in the future. In particular, when the people’s will is expressed in the person of the leader they support…” the top official said.

Hasanov recalled that on 15 July 2016, bandit groups, having used arms against their brothers, attempted to overthrow the democratically elected government in Turkey and failed.

“The events of 1994-1995 in Azerbaijan were also an attempt to break the people’s will and overthrow Heydar Aliyev’s reign. The formula “one nation, two states”, founded by our national leaders Ataturk and Heydar Aliyev, successfully passed the tests of that period and once again showed the world its invincibility,” he added.
