Italy will support the settlement of regional problems, especially the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during its OSCE Chairmanship, said Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

He made the remarks at a briefing following his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on July 18, APA reports.

President Mattarella noted that bilateral and multi-vector relations between Italy and Azerbaijan were once again proved by agreements signed today in Baku.

“Italy will support the settlement of regional problems, especially the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during its OSCE Chairmanship. Instead of changing the format of negotiations on this issue, we want new ways of negotiations that can ensure security in the region, are found. Because, we think this conflict should be resolved not by military by political means. This settlement will be lasting and in line with international law,” the Italian leader said.

Mattarella stated that Italy plays a very active role in talks for a new agreement between the European Union and Azerbaijan.

“We believe that the development of priority issues of our mutual interest will contribute to the enhancement of Italy-Azerbaijan ties within the framework of EU-Azerbaijan cooperation,” he added.

The Italian president then congratulated his Azerbaijani counterpart for the signing of a document on resolute support in Brussels a few days ago.

Italy is also grateful to Azerbaijan for cooperation within NATO, especially for cooperation in Afghanistan, Mattarella noted.

“As you know, Italy plays a special role in this sphere. Italy and Azerbaijan enjoy friendly ties and cooperate in the cultural, economic and political spheres. Italy will always support Azerbaijan’s development,” he added.
